Ponytail Beaucarnea Recurvata

The Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea Recurvata), though not a true palm, is one of the most popular of all tropical plants; it does well and grows very slowly in pots, and out doors may reach a height of about 15 feet or more and in both cases require very little care.

The Ponytail does great both in garden landscapes, in pots and on it's own. From pots it grows very slowly and makes a good houseplant for years. The bulb, or “caudex”, can store a lot of water, enough to carry it through droughts in it's native eastern Mexico. Though not known as a flowering plant, it will occasionally sprout panicles, or small groups of white flowers.

The soil used for this plant should be of the quick draining type and it should be allowed to dry between waterings. This hardy plant can take most indoor environments but do not let it sit in temperatures less than 50°F. Take care to NOT trim the tops of these plants, but DO fertilize in the summer with a liquid fertilizer, or a slow release pellet in the springtime.
